It’s not often that we take a mega-popular app for the Android market and have nothing but bad things to say about it. And that’s certainly not the case with Facebook for Android. It’s just that we don’t have much to say about it that’s great, either.
To use an already over used term: “It is what it is.” There is nothing spectacular or mind-rattling about the Facebook for Android app. It’s just Facebook with problems in our opinion. Don’t get us wrong. We love Facebook. We love getting notified of messages, updates, tags and friends locations when they check in.
-Many times our timeline doesn’t work.
-There is no photo option on the apps main screen. This is something that Google+ got right with its application. Super simple and convenient.
-We don’t like being constantly signed in. Maybe it’s just us, but one of our testers went home after playing around with the Facebook for Android app and had angry IM’s from his mother because he was “available to chat” but wasn’t responding. Which brings us to our next issue…
-We get notified of messages sometimes hours later. It just lags. All notifications are behind.
-Updates usually cause temporary frustration and more lag.
We think that the main issue with the Facebook app is that there is too much being done to it. If they would just concentrate on the photo options, timeline updates, notification updates and speed it would be fine. The more they try to be cute with it though, then it seems the more issues that they have.
The Facebook for Android app has had millions of downloads as you might expect. However, the app currently has a 3.6 out of 5 star rating on the Android Market review section with over 2 million reviews submitted. More than half a million of those reviews rate the app a 1 or 2 stars.
Final Analysis: Unfortunately, Facebook is popular which kind of makes this app a “must have”, but they can do better-a lot better.
The main attraction of social media, and especially social media smart phone applications, is convenience and staying connected. Facebook just isn’t living up to that with their Android Market application. They may want to fix this ASAP. Google+ is moving and moving fast. There is already grumbling on the market place that says that Facebook for Android is not as good as the Google+ app. Despite all of that, this a FREE app and an Android Market “Editor’s Choice” app…
